The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources.

It was while living in this house in Orlando, Florida, that American author and Beat Generation founder Jack Kerouac (1922-1969) received instant fame for the publication of his bestselling novel, On the Road. The final edits of his seminal novel were done while living at this residence, and it was here that he wrote another novel, The Dharma Bums, and a play called the Beat Generation. Read more . . .

McMillan Park Reservoir Historic District, Washington, DC
The park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. as a public park and memorial to the late Senator James McMillan whose McMillan Park Plan of 1901-1902 was instrumental in the establishment of the park at McMillan Reservoir. Upon its completion in 1905, water was pumped from the reservoir to the twentynine slow filtration beds-vaulted and sand-filled structures built of unreinforced concrete-where the water was cleansed and piped to an underground clear reservoir before being distributed.
