- Audiology and Speech/Language Pathology
The VA Audiology and Speech and Language Pathology Service is charged with assisting Veterans who are having difficulty hearing and communicating. Through a wide variety of services, assistive devices, and therapeutic offerings, this department works to ensure their patient’s can live more satisfying lives. Aside from hearing aids, this Service also offers speech therapy, balance testing, treatment of tinnitus (ringing), and much more.

- Homeless Veteran Coordinator
The Portland VA medical center homeless program consists of Community Resource and Referral Center (CRRC), Grant Per Diem Program, Shelter Plus Care Program, Project Based Section 8 housing programs and the HUD-VASH program. The VA housing programs are designed to meet the needs of chronically homeless veterans who are in need of case management services to attain and maintain housing.

The Division of Hospital and Specialty Care exists to provide Veterans with additional services along the continuum of care which can further overall health and wellbeing. The Imaging Service at the Portland VA Medical Center provides comprehensive diagnostic and clinical imaging services for Veterans utilizing state of the art equipment. Studies are completed upon the recommendation of a provider at the Portland VA and timely results are transmitted electronically to that provider.

The Portland VA Medical Center is the largest VA in the State of Oregon, offering 160 inpatient beds when Veterans need the full time and attention of medical practitioners to return to full health. The Portland VA also operates an Emergency Department with 10 acute medical bays when emergent care is needed.

Men and women can experience sexual harassment or sexual assault during their military service. VA refers to these experiences as Military Sexual Trauma, or MST. An MST Coordinator is available at every VA healthcare facility, serving as a contact person for MST-related issues.

The Operative Care Division at the Portland VA Medical Center is a leader on several fronts throughout the VA. Operating one of the most robust surgical programs at a VA within the country, with eight fully staffed and technologically advanced operating rooms, VA doctors perform hundreds of surgical procedures monthly in Portland. The Portland VA is also a Liver and Kidney Transplantation Center. - Pathology & Laboratory Services
The Pathology and Laboratory Services provides a full range of clinical and diagnostic testing for physicians and other providers at the Portland VA Medical Center. Through a continuing attempt at quality and convenience, many Laboratory Services are now offered on a walk-in basis. Timely results are then electronically transmitted to VA providers to assist in clinical decision-making.
The Portland VA is a leader in Pharmacy throughout the nation. Continuing quality and customer satisfaction improvement is a top priority of the Pharmacy Service at the Portland VA – which has increased the ways in which Veterans are able to order and renew their medications – including through the online MyHealtheVet website. The Mail Order Pharmacy is also an available option to Veterans.
The Portland VA Medical Center offers Veterans a full array of services to meet their primary care needs. With more than 60 dedicated providers serving Veterans at 10 sites of care, including eight Community Based Clinics from the Northern Coast to Bend, the Portland VA strives to be Veterans’ provider of choice for their healthcare needs.
Portland VA’s Prosthetics department is here to assist Veterans. We have a wide array of assistive devices with the latest medical technology for those who may need a little extra help. The Portland VAMC is a leader throughout the Department of Veterans Affairs in research. The Portland VA currently had approximately 150 funded investigators and a research budget in 2011 that exceeded $34 million in direct costs. The Portland VA currently ranks in the top 10 nationwide among VA Medical Centers in grant support from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Research is conducted in a total of ~93,000 square feet of wet and dry lab space that supports programs in basic science, clinical research, health services, cooperative studies, epidemiology, and outcomes research.
- Rehabilitation and Long Term Care Division
The Portland VA Medical Center’s Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care (RLTC) Division provides for the needs of Veterans across multiple care needs. Along with offering home-based primary care services, RLTC has skilled nursing, long-term care, hospice, and respite services for Veterans at the Community Living Center on our Vancouver Campus. Physical medicine and other related disciplines are also offered, as well as Physical, Occupational, and Kinesiotherapy.

The Portland VA’s Social Work department offers many services to support Veterans and their families. Utilizing their expertise, licensed social workers can often times assist in solving problems that can be particularly burdensome in times when medical issues complicate things. Social workers can be found on all inpatient units as well as on an outpatient basis. The Portland VA opened the Comprehensive Center for Women Veteran’s Health, the first in the Oregon/SW Washington, in Sep. 2010. We are proud to honor Women Veterans with this new space completely designed with their special needs in mind.
