The San Jose MEPS is one of two Military Entrance Processing Stations located in Northern California; the other is in Sacramento. The origin of the current San Jose MEPS dates back to the late 1950s when it was located on Van Ness Street in San Francisco. In the early 1960s it was relocated to Clay Street in Oakland, and later in 1986 it moved to Broadway also in downtown Oakland. In October 2000, the MEPS relocated from Oakland to Mountain View, adjacent to Moffett Federal Airfield, and was renamed the San Jose MEPS. Whether located in San Francisco, Oakland or San Jose area, the MEPS has had a long and proud history of processing applicants from the Bay Area into the armed services. The San Jose MEPS has a
proud history of community involvement;
by volunteering for charitable causes,
orchestrating blood drives, food and
monetary donations for the homeless shelters,
as well as membership on local Chamber
of Commerce Board of Directors, Leadership
Councils, Red Cross, Coaching Sports
Teams, and volunteering throughout the
region in numerous civic and cultural
events. The San Jose MEPS is one of a network of 65 MEPS located nationwide and in Puerto Rico. A separate Department of Defense (DoD) agency, USMEPCOM is comprised of two geographical sectors and staffed with personnel from all military services. The mission of USMEPCOM and the San Jose MEPS is to process individuals for enlistment or induction into the armed services, based on DoD-approved peacetime and mobilization standards. Three primary areas are considered in determining an applicant's qualifications for enlistment:
