Bocca della Veritas ("the Mouth of Truth") is an image,
carved from Pavonazzetto marble, of a man-like face,
located in the portico of the church of Santa Maria
in Cosmedin in Rome, Italy. Since the Middle Ages,
it has been believed that if one tells a lie while one's
hand is in the mouth of the sculpture, the hand would
be bitten off. |
