How to Apply

The U.S. Mission in Brazil is constantly working to improve the visa application process, reduce the time spent by applicants waiting in the consular areas of the Consulates and Embassy and reduce overall wait times for visa application processing. To apply for a visa all applicants should schedule two appointments – one at the Applicant Service Center (ASC) and another at the Consulate or Embassy – following these steps:

Step 1: Complete DS-160 online application form.

Step 2: Go to the appointment website: http://brazil.usvisa-info.com or call the Call Center at one of the local numbers.

  1. Register online using your DS-160 confirmation code.
  2. Read the interview waiver and renewal pages to determine if you a visa interview is required in your case. 
  3. Pay the visa application fee (MRV fee).  This can be done by credit card through our appointment website or by telephone. Applicants may also pay through a bank boleto at any bank in the boleto network. There will no longer be a separate appointment-scheduling fee or a separate courier fee.
  4. Schedule your appointment at the ASC and, if required, your visa interview at the Consulate or Embassy. Appointments can be made online, through the Call Center or through Skype.

Step 3: Attend your CASV appointment to have your biometric information (photo and fingerprints) collected. Applicants will need to present their current passport, old passports with previous visas and DS-160 confirmation page. Applicants age 66 and over and minors 15 years old and younger do not require fingerprint collection at the CASV so they, or a representative, should deliver a 5x7 photograph that meets State Department Photo Standards.

  • For security reasons, visa applicants are not allowed to enter the Applicant Service Centers (ASC) with bags (with the exception of one small purse) or electronic devices. Appicants may enter with their cell phones as long as they are turned off.

Step 4: Attend your interview appointment, if required, at our Embassy or Consulates. Applicants will need to present current passport, old passports with previous visas and the DS-160 bar code sheet as well as any additional documentation the applicant feels is necessary for the visa interview.

  • For security reasons, visa applicants are not allowed to enter Consulates or the Embassy grounds with bags (with the exception of one small purse), cell phones or any other electronic devices.

Step 5: If the visa is approved it will be issued within 10 businesses days unless additional administrative processing is required.

    R$2.15 to US$1.00.

Important Notice

  • Important symbol (image: U.S. Embassy Brasilia) All visa applicants are advised to provide contact information in Brazil (local e-mail and telephone number) when filling out the DS-160, in case the Embassy/Consulate needs to contact them. This is even more important for those individuals who are renewing temporary work visas and are already temporarily residing in the United States (L-1s, official visas, etc).

    No forms or documents need to be purchased – they are all available for free. No agency, retailer, or despachantes (expediters) claiming to aid in Consular Services are sanctioned by the U.S. Embassy/Consulates.

  • Emergency Services

    Please contact your local Embassy or consulate directly to request emergency or earlier appointments. 

    Send your request explaining your situation and the reason for your emergency. Requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Tourism travel will not be considered as emergency.
