Rep. Chu to Provide Free Income Tax Preparation

Pasadena, CA – With tax season rapidly approaching, Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27) held a press conference today announcing two free programs she will provide residents of the 27th Congressional District to help them navigate the tax process. Now in its fourth year with her office, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program will provide free income tax preparation for taxpayers earning $51,000 or less. In addition, the Congresswoman’s office is running the IRS Facilitated Self-Assistance (FSA) Program. Through FSA, qualified taxpayers earning $57,000 or less can prepare and file online their own state and federal tax returns for free.

Congressmembers Urge Department of Defense to Support Making Hazing a Crime

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-32), along with several other Representatives, sent a letter to the General Counsel of the Department of Defense urging them to support a specific anti-hazing statute in the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Over the last few years, several shocking cases of military hazing have occurred throughout the armed services. This includes the hazing of Army Private Danny Chen, who tragically died 1 year ago on October 3rd after enduring weeks of physical and verbal hazing. In April 2011, the Congresswoman’s nephew, Marine Lance Corporal Harry Lew, took his own life in a foxhole shortly after being hazed and abused for several hours. Despite the Republican Leadership turning off the microphones to block her from speaking, Congresswoman Chu spoke on the House floor in protest.
