The education goal of the U.S. Diplomacy Center is to inspire learning about diplomacy and the work of the nation’s foremost and oldest cabinet agency, the U.S. Department of State. The Center fosters the realization that diplomacy affects every person every day and encourages citizens’ involvement in diplomacy to make a positive difference in the world.
An important goal of all U.S. Diplomacy Center programs is to reach untapped audiences, particularly high school and college classrooms nationally and internationally, in order to broaden understanding of diplomacy as an important tool in foreign affairs and to create a greater constituency for American diplomacy. Using 21st Century Skills, the Center will serve as an ideal resource for educators who teach American and World History, Social Studies, Economics, Geography, Government and International Relations.
Once opened, the Center will offer a nationally recognized teachers’ education program with on-line resources; webcast conferences and forums; digital video conferencing that brings students and diplomats together in a learning environment; curriculum packages tied to standards of learning; and simulation exercises that bring diplomacy to life in the classroom. Museum exhibits and education programs will expose students and visitors to 21st Century Skills, which are tried-and-true tools of diplomacy: creativity and innovation; critical thinking and problem solving; and communication and collaboration. The goal of the U.S. Diplomacy Center is to offer a transformational experience. Visitors will enter as a Citizen and leave as a Citizen Diplomat.
