Supporting Beautification Day– One Brush and One Broom At a Time!

When Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated asked its members to support United We Serve’s Summer Service Initiative, the ladies of the Xi Zeta Omega Chapter located in Washington, DC, joined right in to provide “service to all mankind.”

On Saturday, August 22, 2009, members of the Xi Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority supported Beautification Day 2009 sponsored by the District of Columbia Public Schools. A team of volunteers gathered at Burrville Elementary School to ‘spruce up’ the school building and grounds prior to the beginning of the school year.

Beautification activities included painting doors, school signs, and other structures; clearing and sweeping outside common areas; planting flowers; and weeding and mulching landscaped areas.

Located in NE Washington, DC, Burrville Elementary School serves approximately 350 students from preschool to 5th grades. The school is led by Principal Donnie Rutledge, who along with the Building/Custodial Manager, Mr. Holt, and several members of the McLean Bible Church, worked hand-in-hand with the Xi Zeta Omega team of volunteers on Beautification Day.

Xi Zeta Omega Chapter’s service to Burrville Elementary School continues with a ‘Jump Start the School Year’ school supply drive for students and teachers. School supplies, including composition books, pencil cases, notebooks, crayons, and backpacks, are being donated and will be delivered to the elementary school.

Having the proper resources will help jump start the school year on a positive note. Xi Zeta Omega is looking forward to partnering with Burrville Elementary School on other projects to support the students, teachers, and local community.
