Hitachi Volunteers on 9/11

Staff members from The Hitachi Foundation and Hitachi, Ltd. in Washington, DC spent the 9/11 Day of Service with Covenant House – an organization offering education, vocational training, prevention services, and community outreach to youth who need it most.  Covenant House also provides emergency shelter and food to youth in need of a safe place to sleep.

Hitachi volunteers spent the day with Covenant House staff and young people working with young children while their parents attended job training courses. Volunteers prepared and served meals. One group also used inspiring photos and articles to create a Wall of Hope on one of the drop in center’s recreation room walls.

Throughout the rest of the year, Hitachi employees, through their Community Action Committee, support Covenant House through grants. These grants the cover of the cost of food for the drop in center and mobile outreach.

The day of service was the perfect way to see grant dollars in action and to get a better understanding of the issues facing many young people in DC on a daily basis.
