SEATTLE, Wash. - Follow a day at the firing range with Petty Officer 2nd Class Peter Dewey, a Coast Guard small-arms instructor attached to Station Bellingham, Wash.
The Coast Guard's maritime law enforcement mission dictates that personnel are required to be armed in certain situations. Both Active and Reserve personnel whose duties require them to use small arms must successfully complete small arms training programs under the instruction of a qualified small-arms instructor.
This photo essay focuses on a Coast Guard small-arms instructor. Small-arms instructors must exhibit personal qualities including: unimpeachable character; sound judgment and maturity; exemplary conduct and demeanor; ability to import knowledge and credibility. It is the SAIs responsibility to ensure that Coast Guard units have enough personnel trained and qualified in small-arms to carry out Coast Guard missions. efficient, safe and effective operation of firing ranges and provide the best possible instruction.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Peter Dewey, a Conneaut, Ohio, native, is a maritime enforcement specialist assigned to Coast Guard Station Bellingham, Wash., and the unit's only SAI. Dewey, who was a gunner's mate before laterally transitioning to maritime enforcement specialist, is an expert marksman. The commanding officer of Station Bellingham has granted him the authority to manage the unit's Small Caliber Weapons Training Program.
