Housing in the Local Community
The Housing Management Office (HMO) provides all DoD personnel with personalized services to assist in locating suitable housing in the local community. Although moving is sometimes stressful, it can also be an exciting opportunity to live off base and experience a new location. The HMO will assist you every step of the way to help you find your new home in the local community.

Housing Services
Contact the HMO as soon as you know you are moving. The government housing team will provide you the latest information on the local housing situation and offer complete referral services and relocation assistance to make sure you find a quality place to live.

Support services range from helping members understand their lease agreements and the necessity for a military release clause to assisting in resident and landlord dispute resolution, among many others.

The HMO partners with landlords, realtors and property managers to make sure you receive the most current information about the local housing market. The HMO also monitors housing units offered for rent to the military community, which are listed in the Automated Housing Referral Network (AHRN), a joint service, DoD-sponsored website that offers a 24/7/365 single source of available housing to incoming military personnel and their families.

Go to AHRN.com and create a personal account to view the available housing and get a feel for the size, style and type of housing around your new installation. The listings provide contact information for the landlord or property manager so you can connect with them to discuss available units. Contact the HMO prior to making any firm commitments.

Community Housing Units
Hanscom AFB is located in Middlesex County and is nestled between Lincoln, Lexington, Concord and Bedford Massachusetts. Although Hanscom AFB is a great place to live, work and play, it has the second highest cost of living area in the country and affordable housing can be difficult to find.

The median home price in Middlesex County is approximately $399,900. The average monthly rent for a two bedroom is $1,874.00, a three bedroom is $2,250.00 and a four bedroom is $2,900.00. Rental prices drop significantly the further away you move from the Hanscom AFB area but the commuting time is a factor all personnel should consider. The commute times can vary significantly due to traffic and weather.

You can also visit www.mass.gov for information on towns and cities in Massachusetts. It is also a great resource for information on renter's rights, tenant laws, vehicle registration and insurance requirements.

For information about the housing allowances that financially support your move, see Referral and Relocation Assistance.

Personal Property Insurance
You need to obtain legal liability and personal property insurance for your possessions and should choose the options and amounts that best fit your needs and lifestyle.

Before purchasing your insurance, please consult the HMO for more information about coverage.

School Information
For families, we understand that where your children attend school plays a large factor in the decision of where to live.

For your convenience, all community housing listings in the Automated Housing Referral Network site (AHRN.com) include a link to schools in the area surrounding the listed house. You can also visit www.mass.gov for information on schools in Massachusetts.
