1/28/2013 - JOINT BASE ANACOSTIA-BOLLING, D.C. -- The United States Air Force Band is proud to announce Leah Bandman of Burke, Va., as the winner of the 2013 Colonel George S. Howard Young Artist Competition.

Her winning performance with the Band will take place on March 4, 2013 at the University of Maryland, in a joint concert between the Concert Band and the University of Maryland Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

Bandman is a senior at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Va. No stranger to The United States Air Force Band, she is the private flute student of former Concert Band member retired Air Force Master Sgt. Ardyth Scott, and the daughter of former Ceremonial Brass member retired Air Force Master Sgt. Dave Bandman.

Additionally, she is the drum major of the Lake Braddock High School Marching Band and a member of the Northern Virginia Youth Winds.

Despite her varied experience, her performance with the Concert Band will be a highlight of her young career. Says Bandman, "This is definitely going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It will be an honor to perform with the caliber of musicians in The Air Force Band."

The Colonel George S. Howard Young Artist Competition is an annual competition that began in 1994. It is named for the second commander and conductor of The U.S. Air Force Band, honoring his many contributions to young musicians.

The competition is open to all high school band instrumentalists in grades 9 through 12 who are United States citizens or legal permanent residents. Originally a competition for winds and percussion, it now alternates yearly between brass/percussion and woodwinds.

For the preliminary round, a panel from The United States Air Force Band chooses finalists from taped auditions. These selected finalists perform in the final round of competition which takes place at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C. The winner then appears with The United States Air Force Concert Band at a concert in the national capital region.
