JEC Chairman Casey Releases December State-by-State Economic Snapshot

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), Chairman of the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee (JEC), today released the 24th edition of its state-by-state snapshots which detail each individual state’s economic progress. The report shows that more than two out of three states recorded private sector job gains in November and nationally, 147,000 private sector jobs were added. 

“Thirty-two states saw private sector job growth in November and manufacturing jobs increased in thirty states,” said Chairman Casey. “As we begin a new session of Congress, Republicans and Democrats need to come together to help businesses create jobs and move the economy forward.”

Report highlights include:

•   Thirty-two states added private-sector jobs in November. In the past 12 months, 43 states gained private-sector jobs, with 1.9 million added nationally.

•   Twenty-three states had statistically significant decreases in the unemployment rate during November. In the past 12 months, 22 states and the District of Columbia reported statistically significant decreases in the unemployment rate. The national unemployment rate during the month was 7.7 percent, down from 8.7 percent a year earlier.

•   Manufacturing employment expanded in 30 states in November. In the past 12 months, 31 states added manufacturing positions, with 174,000 added nationwide.

•   Twenty-five states added jobs in the professional and business services sector in November.  In the past year, 41 states have added professional and business services jobs, with 533,000 added nationally. 

•   Twenty-seven states added jobs in the leisure and hospitality sector during November.  In the past 12 months, 42 states added leisure and hospitality jobs with 305,000 positions added nationally.

The report uses recently released state-level data to explain how the economic recovery is unfolding in each state.
