- Providence VAMC Hosts PDHRA for Returning Aviators
On February 2nd and 3rd, the Providence VA Medical Center hosted a Post-Deployment Health Readiness Assessment (PDHRA) for members of the 126th Aviation Regiment. The event was the fifth PDHRA conducted with the Rhode Island National Guard since 2012. Soldiers of the 126th Aviation Regiment returned this past October from a 9-month deployment to Kuwait, where they performed aviation support missions with Blackhawk helicopters in Southwest Asia. The Providence VA Medical Center would like to thank them for their service!
- Local Scouts Donate Socks to Homeless Veterans
Webelos Scouts, paid a special visit to the Providence VA Medical Center’s Homeless PACT Clinic. Their mission: to deliver and present 15 packages of socks to homeless Veterans.
- New technology allows the Dental Clinic to do amazing things
Dr. Peter Latham, Chief of Dental Service, explains: “The lengthy process of providing our Veterans with a crown or bridge has been in place for a long time. My staff and I had worked to tightened up the process as much as we could, but the timeframe was still way too long. Instead of accepting this with a ‘that’s just the way it is’ attitude, we went out and looked at other options. When we looked to the CAD/CAM milling system we knew we had the opportunity to turn this process around and make it Veteran friendly.”

- Groundbreaking for New Women Veterans' Health Clinic
This past week, the Providence VA Medical Center held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Women Veterans' Health Clinic. The new Clinic will feature three examination rooms, a GYN procedure room, and a multi-purpose room--all with state-of-the-art equipment designed to provide women Veterans with comprehensive primary care.
- Providence VAMC Opens New Homeless PACT Clinic
The Providence VA Medical Center has a long history of providing high quality healthcare and services to homeless Veterans. Beginning in 2006, the Medical Center developed a homeless-oriented Primary Care Clinic to provide integrated care to homeless Veterans. Evaluation of the program showed participants had improved health outcomes as well as a 30% reduction in emergency department use and a 50% reduction in inpatient days. “Building on these successful results,” says Dr. Thomas O’Toole, now VA’s Homeless PACT National Director and formerly the Chief of Primary Care at the Providence VA Medical Center, “the Providence VA Medical Center became the model for the Homeless PACT, which has now spread to most areas of the country.”

The Providence VA Medical Center held its annual Veterans Day Observance to a full auditorium last Thursday, November 8. The keynote speaker for the ceremony was Major General Kevin McBride (Commanding General, Rhode Island National Guard & Adjutant General for the State of Rhode Island.
- One VA! - Lending A Helping Hand
One VA! In support of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, the Providence VAMC is providing two 800-KW generators to help during their recovery efforts. The Manhattan Campus was evacuated to ensure the safety of patients throughout the storm. Patients were transferred to neighboring VA hospitals, including the Brooklyn and Bronx VA facilities.
- Providence VAMC Dedicates New Research Center of Excellence
Providence VA Medical Center conducted a dedication ceremony/open house for its new Research Center of Excellence for Neurorestoration and Neurotechnology (CfNN) today in the Medical Center’s Research Building 32. The Center is a collaboration among the Providence VA Medical Center, the Brown Institute for Brain Science at Brown University, Butler Hospital, Lifespan, and Massachusetts General Hospital. This distinguished researchers and clinicians in advancing and translating new therapies and technologies to restore function in disorders of major interest to Veteran populations, including spinal cord injury, limb loss, stroke, post-traumatic stress disorder, pain, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and depression.
