Sample Models / Mental Health

This collaboration is an excellent sample model to improve all behavioral health services locally and across a State.

New Mexico’s Behavioral Health Collaborative

This collaborative helps guide the behavioral health planning and services in New Mexico.

The partnership was established as a result of a mandate. In 2004, the New Mexico State Legislature passed a law directing the Department of Health to develop a comprehensive State health plan.

The goal of the collaborative is to have a single Behavioral Health delivery system in New Mexico, in which available resources are coordinated and managed effectively. Most importantly, it strives to create a system driven by consumers and family members.

The local collaborative is a committee that is working to help improve all behavioral health services locally and across the State of New Mexico. There are 15 local collaboratives that cover the entire State.

A strength of this arrangement was that it established priorities to address cultural competency in behavioral health. Some materials, such as a PowerPoint presentation and brochure about the collaborative, were developed to meet the needs of the Latino community and were written in Spanish. In addition, the Behavioral Health Transformation State Incentive Grant funded translation services for the Spanish-speaking community.
