Maywood, New Jersey, Site
FUSRAP Site

Maywood Map

Background—The Maywood, New Jersey, Site is undergoing remediation by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) under the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP). FUSRAP was established in 1974 to remediate sites where radioactive contamination remained from Manhattan Project and early U.S. Atomic Energy Commission operations.

History—The Maywood Site is located in Bergen County approximately 13 miles northeast of Newark. The site consists of the former Maywood Interim Storage Site and various vicinity properties, including property owned by Stepan Company and 88 residential, commercial, and government properties. The site is included on the National Priorities List.

From 1916 to 1959, rare earth metals and thorium were processed at the Maywood Chemical Works, resulting in contamination of the properties. In 1985, the federal government acquired an 11.7-acre portion of the site to store soils and debris excavated from the vicinity properties until a permanent storage site became available.

Final Conditions—USACE has completed remedial action on residential and commercial properties that are part of the Maywood site and is currently addressing the remaining commercial and government-owned properties. Subsurface characterization of soil and groundwater continues. Upon completion of remediation, DOE intends to sell or transfer their property for beneficial reuse.
