Our Mission

As part of the Navy's strategic sealift capability, Maritime Prepositioning Squadron Two, or MPS Squadron Two, ensures the readiness of ships in the Military Sealift Command Prepositioning Program in the Indian Ocean. These ships carry afloat prepositioned cargo for various U.S. military services. The squadron's mission is to transport vital equipment and supplies to a designated area of operations in support of combatant commanders worldwide.

Command Profile

MPS Squadron Two has an afloat staff of ten officer and senior enlisted personnel under the command of a U.S. Navy Captain. The staff is embarked on one of the squadron's maritime prepositioning ships. Staff members serve one-year tours in a continuously underway, forward-deployed status. The MPS Squadron Two ships operate out of Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory.

The ship composition of MPSRON TWO is dynamic. At present it stands at USNS SGT William R. Button, MV SSG Edward A. Carter, Jr., MV TSGT John A. Chapman, USNS Lewis and Clark, USNS 1st LT Baldomero Lopez, MV LTC John U. D. Page, USNS Pomeroy, USNS Seay, USNS Sisler, USNS GYSGT Fred W. Stockham, USNS Watkins and USNS Watson.

The ships and squadron staff form only part of the team needed to deploy cargo. MPS Squadron Two staff's main job is to maintain command and control as well as keep the vessels and their cargo ready at all times until an order to deploy is given. On 24-hours notice, every MPS Squadron Two ship can leave port and sail anywhere in the world, transporting combat support equipment to Marine Corps, Navy, Army and Air Force forces to accomplish their missions.

Since its inception, the squadron has supported many operations including Operation Desert Storm, Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, Operation Support Hope in Kenya/Rwanda and Operation Iraqi Freedom. MPS Squadron Two also participates in various exercises including one South East Asia Cooperation Against Terrorism, or SEACAT, exercise per year.

MPS Squadron Two is a component of the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command, administratively reporting to the prepositioning program manager at Military Sealift Command Headquarters in Washington, D.C. MPS Squadron Two is an operational asset of the U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet. The squadron's operational commander is Commander, Military Sealift Far East located in Singapore.
