Project Description: This project has been
completed. The Quality Health Outcomes Model (QHOM) and Dr. Radwin's
middle-range theory of high quality cancer nursing care provided a dynamic
framework for examining relationships among patient-centered nursing care,
patient state and trait characteristics, health care system characteristics,
and desired patient outcomes. The series of studies culminated in the
examination of relationships among:
- Patient-centered nursing care for a
racially diverse group of hospitalized cancer patients.
- Patient state and
trait characteristics, including gender, race, and age.
- Health care system
characteristics at the unit level.
- Desired oncology patient outcomes.
Career Goals: Dr. Radwin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts and a Yvonne L. Munn Nurse Researcher in the Munn Center for Nursing Research at Massachusetts General Hospital. She earned her Ph.D. in Nursing from Boston College where she received numerous academic awards. She continues to conduct studies and carry out activities related to the quality of patient-centered nursing care and the achievement of desired health-related quality of life (HRQOL) outcomes.
Progress to Date: Conceptual analyses in this study addressed the QHOM as a research program framework and offered QHOM refinement. Qualitative findings provided a conceptual definition of individualization, which characterizes patient-centered care, and a typology of concepts reflecting cancer patients' descriptions of nursing care.
