Commandant of the Coast Guard Adm. Bob Papp was joined by Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. James Amos and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert to discuss maritime strategic issues during the WEST 2013 Luncheon Town Hall Address in San Diego, Calif. A main point of discussion during the event was the Commander-in-Chief’s strategic guidance that the U.S military “…will of necessity rebalance toward the Asia-Pacific region.”

Adm. Papp discusses cutter topics at Surface Navy Association’s Symposium

Addressing a crowd, including both Coast Guard cuttermen and Navy surface warfare officers, the Commandant described how maritime countries have shown an increasing emphasis on a “maritime governance” approach using law enforcement authorities in contrast to the traditional Mahanian “control of the sea” approach to ensure safety, security and prosperity.

The start of the spring semester began this week at the United States Coast Guard Academy, and Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp traveled to the New London, Conn.-based institution to continue the tradition of delivering a leadership address to the corps of cadets.

Honoring BMCS Terrell Horne III

More than 1,000 people gathered at U.S. Coast Guard Base Los Angeles – Long Beach in San Pedro today to attend a memorial ceremony honoring Senior Chief Petty Officer Terrell Horne III, a Coast Guardsman who was killed in the line of duty Dec. 2, 2012, while carrying out law enforcement operations near Santa Cruz Island.

Commandant of the Coast Guard Adm. Bob Papp addressed Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 – the Island Knights – in Guam last week, thanking them for their outstanding support of Coast Guard search and rescue operations. The Coast Guard has no helicopters stationed in Guam and has relied upon HSC-25 since its formation in 1984 for airlift assistance with both maritime and over-land search and rescue.

To Europe & Far East: Adm. Papp continues international trip with stop in Singapore

Commandant of the Coast Guard Adm. Bob Papp continued his outreach trip last week with an official visit to Singapore to meet with international partner agencies and Coast Guardsmen stationed there. This visit provided insights into the challenges faced by the Port of Singapore, the busiest port in the world as measured by vessel arrival tonnage, and further strengthened ties between the Coast Guard and Singapore.

BMC Horne stood the watch on the front lines of Coast Guard operations throughout his nearly 14 years of active duty. He previously served at Coast Guard Stations Emerald Isle, Humboldt Bay and Charleston, and also sailed aboard the CGC DALLAS. Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff visits Seattle Coast Guard units

Last week the 13th Coast Guard District had a rare opportunity to showcase what the nation’s longest-serving sea service brings to the fight for Gen. Martin Dempsey, the 18th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
