The Marine Coatings Science Section will conduct basic and applied research to synthesize and produce advanced, multi-functional marine coatings technology for all naval environments including immersion, alternate immersion and atmospheric exposures typical of Navy and Marine Corps platforms. The section will work to understand and exploit organic chemistry and polymer synthesis to develop marine coatings which will provide improved function performance, extended lifecycles and reduced maintenance. Current and future areas of research will include, as a minimum, antifouling coatings, topside and freeboard coatings with combined corrosion and signature control capabilities, high flow, wear and erosion resistant coatings, interior fire resistant coatings and next generation nonskid coatings.
