For better service please have your passport application complete with photographs 15 minutes before your appointment.

A passport is an internationally recognized travel document that verifies the identity and nationality of the bearer. A valid U.S. passport is required to enter and leave most foreign countries. All American citizens including dual nationals MUST enter the United States on a U.S. passport.  Only the U.S. Department of State has the authority to grant issue or verify United States passports.

American citizens residing or traveling abroad who require issuance of a U.S. passport will be issued the latest, state-of-the-art passport incorporating a photo-digitized image and other enhanced security features.  U.S. Embassies and Consulates achieve this goal by transferring the passport issuance function to a domestic U.S. passport facility.

The average time for processing a new passport is approximately 10-15 working days from the time of the application.  However, American citizens are encouraged to apply early for renewal of their expiring passports.

U.S. citizens, including minors, in need of passport services must appear in person at the U.S. Embassy in Lima. See the "Passports for Minors under Age 16" section for special instructions regarding children.  For children 15 and younger, the passport validity is 5 years. F or 16 and older, it is 10 years.

To apply for or renew a U.S. passport in Peru, you will need to come to American Citizen Services at the U.S. Embassy, Monday to Friday, from 8:00am to 11:30am, except American and Peruvian holidays.

Applications are done by appointment only except for confirmed emergencies.  U.S. Embassies and Consulates issue temporary passports in emergency cases usually for return to the United States.  Such passports are usually issued the same day, are limited in validity, and cannot be extended.

Starting October 1, 2011

Every applicant requesting a consular report of birth abroad, passport and/or notary services, must bring their own set of copies along with the original documents.  Unfortunately, as per US government regulations we are required to charge US$1 per copy taken at the Embassy.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Photo Vendor at the Embassy

A photo vendor is now available in the Embassy waiting area for immigrant and non-immigrant visa appointments (after passing through security) between 7:30am and 3:00pm.  The vendor’s services are a safe, secure, and economical alternative for our applicants filing passport applications.   You may also have photos taken from private vendors before your appointment if you prefer.
