SENIOR COMMERCE TRADE OFFICIAL TELLS HOOSIERS 'GO GLOBAL' -- TOUTS THE U.S.-MEXICO TRADE RELATIONSHIP AS A DRIVER OF GROWTH FOR INDIANA
INDIANAPOLIS - Assistant Secretary of Commerce Michael Camuñez wrapped up his two-day visit to Indianapolis by speaking at a luncheon for the World Trade Club of Indiana. Camuñez focused his remarks on the Administration's trade policy agenda and the importance of the U.S.-Mexico border trade relationship and its implications for the state.
“Indiana exports more than $3.2 billion annually to Mexico, which supports more than 67,000 jobs in the state,” Camuñez stated. “As we strengthen cross border trade and grow our economic ties with Mexico, Indiana will continue to benefit. This means real jobs and real economic growth for the people of Indiana.”
Camuñez highlighted President Obama’s National Export Initiative, which seeks to double exports by the end of 2014 and create millions of American jobs. President Obama’s vision is for Americans to make, grow and provide services that the rest of world buys.
Camuñez said, “To put it simply, we want to build it here and sell it everywhere.”
Camuñez also presented an award recognizing Tom Miller, President of the Indiana World Trade Club and Managing Director of Foreign Exchange at PNC Bank, for his efforts to promote trade and exports. The World Trade Club has partnered with the Indianapolis Export Assistance Center on a number of international trade events, to include the launch of Indiana’s first World Trade Day in April 2012.
While in Indianapolis, Camuñez also toured Allison Transmission, Inc., and the Hoosier Gasket Corporation, both of which are Indiana-based manufacturers that export. He met with company leaders to discuss their supply chains and export operations to Mexico.
The Indianapolis metropolitan area ranked among the 50 largest export markets in the United States with merchandise exports totaling more than $9 billion in 2010. Mexico is Indianapolis’ 3rd largest trading partner, with exports totaling $591 million. Mexico is the United States’ second-largest export market, accounting for approximately $200 billion of U.S. exports in 2011.
