Senior Commerce Official to Recieve Public Service Award
Sánchez Honored for Work to Create New Opportunities for American Businesses, Workers
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Francisco Sánchez will be honored the evening of June 1st for his commitment to public service by The Latin Chamber of Commerce of the United States (CAMACOL). The Excellence in Public Sector Service Award will be presented at CAMACOL’s 33rd Hemispheric Congress, where Sánchez will also provide keynote remarks.
“I am honored to receive this award because CAMACOL has done outstanding work to open doors of opportunity for Latino businesses,” said Sánchez. “I applaud the organization for its leadership in identifying new industries for Florida, for its efforts on behalf of workers and businesses, and for its commitment to building a prosperous economic future for all.”
Sánchez was selected to receive the award by the directors of the Permanent Secretariat of the Hemispheric Congress. A Florida native, Sánchez has dedicated his life to public service, and has served in roles at the Florida Department of Commerce; as Chief of Staff to Buddy MacKay when he was Special Envoy for the Americas during the Clinton Administration; and as the Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs at the U.S. Department of Transportation, also during the Clinton Administration.
His work to support American workers and businesses continues today in his role as the head of the International Trade Administration, which supports jobs and economic growth by promoting U.S. companies; strengthens American competitiveness across all industries; and undertakes a range of trade promotion and trade advocacy efforts, specifically focusing on assisting small and medium-sized businesses. During his tenure, Sánchez has had a leading role in achieving the goals of President Obama’s National Export Initiative, which aims to double U.S. exports over a five-year period. In 2011 alone, U.S. exports reached a record $2.1 trillion in total value, supporting nearly 10 million jobs.
CAMACOL is the largest Hispanic business organization in South Florida and one of the most influential minority business associations in the United States. The Hemispheric Congress is an international business forum and network of national chambers of commerce throughout Latin American, the Caribbean and Spain.
