Obama Official, U.S. Delegation Conclude Trade Mission in South Africa
CAPE TOWN, South Africa – Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Francisco Sánchez today concluded his historic trade mission to Zambia and South Africa by promoting the new “Doing Business in Africa” (DBIA) campaign during remarks to Western Cape regional business leaders in Cape Town.
“The Doing Business in Africa campaign harnesses the resources of the U.S. Government to assist U.S. businesses in identifying and seizing opportunities in sub-Saharan Africa,” Sánchez said. “It provides the concrete actions needed to step up our activities to foster greater economic activity between Sub-Saharan Africa and the United States.”
Cape Town was the final stop for the 13 U.S. companies that accompanied Sanchez on his multi-sector trade mission. The delegation also visited Lusaka, Zambia; and Johannesburg. It was the first-ever U.S. Department of Commerce led trade mission to Zambia. At each stop, participating companies met with key government decision makers and prospective private sector partners.
Sánchez joined Acting U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank in Johannesburg as she launched the DBIA on November 28. The DBIA is an important piece of President Obama’s “U.S. Strategy Toward Sub-Saharan Africa” which strives to spur economic growth, trade, and investment on the continent.
Africa is home to six of the 10 fastest-growing countries in the world. U.S. trade with Africa has tripled during the past decade with U.S. goods exports to sub-Saharan Africa now exceeding $21 billion.
“As the continent grows richer, its demand for improved infrastructure, energy services, and high quality consumer and agricultural products will rise,” Sánchez said. “The companies that have joined me here in South Africa can help provide the quality products and services necessary to meet this growing demand.”
