Under Secretary for International Trade Francisco SÁnchez Launches Education Services Trade Mission in Indonesia
First Education-Focused U.S. Trade Mission to Promote International Education Opportunities
JAKARTA, INDONESIA – Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Francisco Sánchez arrived in Jakarta today to launch the Department of Commerce-led education services-focused trade mission, the largest of its kind. Sánchez is accompanied by representatives from 56 U.S. colleges and universities looking to expand the educational opportunities for international students wishing to study in the United States.
“I’m excited to bring representatives from some of America’s finest colleges and universities to Indonesia, and later in the week to Vietnam, to promote the educational opportunities for their students interested in studying in the United States. The participants will also meet with Indonesian institutions of higher learning to pursue partnerships that will expand the understanding between students in both our countries through faculty and student exchanges, and joint research projects.”
Education and training ranks among the top 10 U.S. services exports. During the most recent academic year, tuition and living expenses from international students and their families brought in nearly $20 billion to the U.S economy. There are more than 7,000 Indonesian students pursuing higher education in the United States.
This mission supports President Obama’s U.S.-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership in which the education sector is the number one priority. The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta has a goal to more than double the current number of Indonesian students studying at U.S. educational institutions by 2014 to 15,000.
The mission continues to Ho Chi Mihn City and Hanoi, Vietnam. This trade mission advances President Obama’s National Export Initiative which aims to double U.S. exports by 2015, supporting economic and job growth.###
