North Carolina District Export Council Wins Inaugural Council of the Year Award
North Carolina DEC promotes the President's National Export Initiative
DETROIT – The nation’s 60 District Export Councils (DEC), partnering with the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA), convened in Detroit for the annual International District Export Council Conference. DECs and ITA work together to promote the importance of U.S. exports to strengthening the U.S. economy, and creating and supporting American jobs. ITA today honored the North Carolina DEC as the 2010 DEC of the Year for its outstanding efforts in fostering exports.
“The North Carolina District Export Council has an outstanding record of mentoring local new-to-export and new-to-market companies on exporting, and supporting President Obama’s National Export Initiative” said Ro Khanna, U.S. and Foreign Commercial deputy assistant secretary for domestic operations. “The group’s work with local United States Export Assistance Centers is critical to expanding U.S. exports and supporting American jobs.”
In addition to mentoring local companies on the advantages of exporting, the North Carolina DEC excelled in export education, conducting Export University and ExporTech classes throughout the state. It has joined forces with the South Carolina DEC to organize a trade mission to Canada on November 1. Wayne Cooper of Arcon Manufacturing, Charlotte, N.C., is the North Carolina DEC chairman.
This is the inaugural DEC of the Year Award recognizing the contributions and accomplishments of an outstanding local DEC in furthering the mission of the ITA in the categories of company outreach, innovation and strategic management.
“During this year, the North Carolina DEC excelled in its efforts to promote the benefits of exporting to North Carolina businesses. Its efforts will help us achieve President Obama’s goal of doubling U.S. exports in five years,” added Francisco Sánchez, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade. “As partners, we strive to expand U.S. exports resulting in increased demand and production, and the creation of American jobs needed to ensure the continued strengthening of the U.S. economy.”
The four-day International DEC Conference brings DEC members, U.S. government officials, trade organizations, and business representatives together to address key trade issues. This year’s conference theme is “Capitalizing on America’s Export Advantages: Green & Innovation.” Commerce Secretary Gary Locke will address the conference on Tuesday.
Under Secretary Sánchez will highlight the importance of our trade relationship with Canada during remarks Tuesday evening in Windsor, Ontario, as part of the conference’s “Trade & Canada” day agenda.
