International Trade Administration and Economic Development Administration promote California exports and job Creation
NEWARK, Calif. – Officials from the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA) and Economic Development Administration (EDA) joined forces today with local government and labor leaders to discuss a strategy to promote California exports and create jobs at the Manufacturing, Exports and Job Creation in the New Economy Forum, in Newark, Calif.
“The NUMMI plant closure makes President Obama’s National Export Initiative especially important to Californians,” said Ro Khanna, deputy assistant secretary for domestic operations. “With 4,700 newly unemployed workers, it is crucial that California manufacturers expand their export markets. When companies export more they sell more. When they sell more they hire more.”
Brian McGowan, EDA’s deputy assistant secretary presented a U.S. Department of Commerce EDA grant in the amount of $330,000 to the city of Fremont to support strategic planning efforts for regional job creation.
The forum, hosted by ITA’s U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service, explored how Silicon Valley innovation – particularly in the manufacturing sectors – can drive new job creation; identify strategies for preparing the workforce for the 21st Century and discuss strategies to promote exports and create well-paying jobs.
Khanna presented an Export Achievement Award to Sylvan Source, Inc., a San Carlo Calif. based provider of ultra-clean water systems. The Export Achievement Award recognizes small- and medium-sized enterprises that have successfully entered the international marketplace. The International Trade Administration (ITA) strengthens the competitiveness of U.S. industry, promotes trade and investment, and ensures fair trade through the rigorous enforcement of our trade laws and agreements. ITA works to improve the global business environment and helps U.S. organizations compete at home and abroad.
