Retirement Pay
$ 485,324 ! That is how much you military career could be worth by serving PART TIME in the Army National Guard after leaving active duty with just four years of service.

How it all adds up:
Let's say you entered active duty on January 1, 2000 at age 19 and served for four years. In those four years you will earn about $ 64,671 in basic pay. This assumes promotion to E-2 at six months, E-3 at 14 months, and E-4 at 26 months.

After 4 years on active duty, you join the Army National Guard and serve part time (12 weekend drills) and 15 days for annual training each year. After serving the minimum time required to qualify for a military retirement, you will have earned about $ 115,522 in basic pay. This assumes promotion to E-5 at six years of service, E-6 at 12 years of service and E-7 at 16 years of service.

TOTAL PAY EARNED AFTER FOUR YEARS ON ACTIVE DUTY AND 16 YEARS OF PART TIME SERVICE IN THE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD: $ 176,193

After completing 20 years of combined active duty (four years) and PART TIME service in the Army National Guard (16 years of serving one weekend per month and 15 days active duty each year), you will qualify for retired pay starting at age 60 and each month after that for THE REST OF YOUR LIFE !! And that is in addition to any other government annuity or private retirement plan that you are eligible for.

Based on four years of active duty and attending drill just 2 days each month and serving on active duty for only 15 days each year while in the Army National Guard, your estimated monthly retired pay starting at age 60 will be: $1,825.00.

All this for transitioning to the Army National Guard after serving 4 years on active duty and continuing to serve about 16 hours each month and 2 weeks each summer!

* Estimated Value of retirement at age 60 assumes basic pay increases at 3.2 percent each year, retirement Cost of Living Adjustments of 2.0 per year, 5.5 percent investment interest, and non disability mortality rates. Assumes member transfers to the Retired Reserve on January 1, 2021 at grade E-7. Uses current mortality tables and assumes the member does not have a disability upon retirement.
