U.S. Government Reduces School Dropout in Khatlon

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) celebrated the launch of its School Dropout Prevention Pilot Program in Khatlon oblast.  U.S. Ambassador Susan Elliot, Minister of Education of the Republic of Tajikistan Nouridin Saidov, and other Ministry of Education officials attended the event. The launch ceremony, held at Danghara School #2, marked the official kick-off of the school-based activities of the USAID program to reduce the dropout rate of grade 9 students.

U. S. Government Opens Water User Association Office in Khatlon

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Country Director, Kathleen McDonald participated in a ceremony to officially open the office for the Nahri Kalon Water User Association in Yangiyul Jamoat of Qubodiyon district. The ceremony was attended by local government officials, U.S. Embassy representatives, local citizens, and implementers of the U.S. Government’s Feed the Future initiative.

U.S. Government Delivers New Waste Disposal Trucks to Jamoat Leaders

The U.S. Agency USAID/Tajikistan Country Director Kathleen McDonald participated in the transfer of three specialized waste disposal trucks to the jamoats of Isfisor, Zarzamin, and Gafurov. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funded and implemented the project through its Local Development Initiative. 

Ms. McDonald, Mr. Sodik Mirholikov, Chairman of the Gafurov District, and Mr. Gafur Hakimov, Deputy Chairman of the Sughd Oblast, presented the jamoat leaders with keys to the new trucks.

U.S. Government Opens Primary School in Sughd

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) through its Tajikistan Stability Enhancement Program (TSEP) handed over a newly constructed primary school in Marhamat village of Asht district. The newly constructed primary school, consisting of 4 classrooms, can accommodate roughly 200 first to fourth grade students and will provide regular employment to 4 teachers and a school principal.

Previously, children had to walk over 1 km to the nearest school. In winter, due to snow and road conditions, it was difficult for children to attend school.

U.S. Government Establishes Loan Mechanism for Purchase of Farm Machinery

The USAID Productive Agriculture Project and the Khatlon Region Administration hosted an event in Qurghonteppa to celebrate the purchase of over 50 tractors by farms in the 12 western districts of the Khatlon Region, the target area for the USAID Feed the Future initiative. U.S. Ambassador Susan Elliott and Regional Chairman Gaibullo Afzal opened the event and presented ten dekhan farms with the keys to their new tractors.

U. S. Government Increases Access to Safe Drinking Water

Today, U.S. Embassy Charge d’Affaires, a.i. Sarah Penhune, participated in the opening ceremony for a safe drinking water system in Pakhtaobod, Tojikobod Jamoat,Vakhsh Raion.  The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funded and implemented the project through its Tajikistan Safe Drinking Water Project (TSDWP).  Local government officials, USAID representatives, community citizens, and the TSDWP project team took part in the ceremony which included a performance by local school children on the importance of clean water and good hygiene.
