The following is a statement released by George Washington University Hospital:

Early this morning, Congressman Pete Olson was brought to the George Washington University Hospital after a fainting episode at the House gym. Hospital physicians determined that the episode was caused by a slow heartbeat, or bradycardia.

"This morning, Congressman Olson had a dual-chamber pacemaker implanted which will continue to regulate his heartbeat. The procedure went smoothly with no complications," said Allen Solomon, MD, cardiologist at the George Washington University Hospital and Professor of Medicine. "This is a common, often asymptomatic, condition and we expect the Congressman to resume his active lifestyle."

Currently the Congressman is awake and joking with the hospital staff, and is anxious to get back to work. Olson is very grateful for all of the well wishes and prayers, he has received from family, friends, and his colleagues on the Hill.

Congressman Olson will be returning home to Texas tomorrow to spend the weekend with his family and will return to Washington next week for scheduled legislative business.
