Summary

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is initiating an audit on the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) purchase card program.  Issued via the General Services Administration's SmartPay® program, these cards offer a convenient and efficient way for government agencies to purchase a wide variety of goods and services.  In fiscal year 2010, Department employees made more than $200 million in purchases with purchase cards.  Recent OIG investigations have identified internal control issues leading to instances of fraud within the program.  Our audit objective is to assess the adequacy of controls established to prevent and detect inappropriate or unauthorized use of DOT- issued purchase cards.
