Colonel Paul E. Knapp is vice commander, 908th Airlift Wing, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. The wing contributes to the nation's defense by providing airlift and related services through the efforts of more than 1,200 Reservists and eight C-130 Hercules aircraft. Unit Reservists fly nearly one million miles annually, engaging in training and supporting real world operations.

Knapp entered the Air Force in 1992 as a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy. On active duty, he served as a Special Agent for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations prior to attending navigator training at Randolph AFB, Texas, and Pensacola Naval Air Station, Fla. He served two operational tours as an F-15E weapon systems officer and one as an air liaison officer to the U.S. Army in South Korea. He separated from active duty in August 2003 and joined the Reserve 95th Airlift Squadron, 440th Airlift Wing, General Mitchell Air Reserve Station, Milwaukee, Wisc., flying the C-130H Hercules.

His previous position prior to the 908th was as the deputy operations group commander for the 413th Flight Test Group, Robins AFB, Ga. In that position, he was responsible for providing qualified aircrew and associated support personnel to conduct functional and acceptance check flights of aircraft following the completion of depot-level maintenance.

Knapp has served as an instructor, evaluator, flight commander and squadron commander. He is a master navigator with more than 2,500 flying hours, mostly in the F-15E and C-130H. He has 681 combat hours over 262 combat sorties supporting Operations Allied Force, Northern Watch, Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and Joint Task Force Horn of Africa.
