On a humid Florida morning, Lisa Higgins works with Dixie, one of her human remains detection dogs, at the site of the once-abandoned Munree Cemetery in eastern Tallahassee, Florida. Local residents and archaeological groups have joined together to locate and preserve an estimated unmarked 250 gravesites on the five-acre plot of land.

Volunteering her time and investigative talents, FBI Special Agent Michelle Wyckoff scans the terrain at Munree Cemetery with a metal detector in an attempt to locate leftover spars of iron commonly used in the past as temporary grave markers.

Professional archaeologist Barbara Hines, outreach coordinator for the Florida Public Archaeology Network, takes a moment to clean and help preserve one of the few stone markers standing at the Munree Cemetery site. “When people take an active role in preservation, they then have a vested interest in preserving their past,” she said.
