Niger American Corners Celebrate Anniversaries

While on a visit to several cities in Niger last month, a team from the U.S. Embassy stopped by to help commemorate anniversaries of the American Corners in  Zinder and Maradi.

The Zinder American Corner opened its doors on Feb. 1, 2006. The anniversary celebration began on February 9th with an open house and display on Black History Month. The next day, the Center hosted a conference on civil rights and tolerance, attended by more than 90 people, including the director of the local French Cultural Center. Following the conference, the American Corner hosted a concert with local artists and a film screening.

 The American Corner of Maradi, which opened on Jan. 7, 2009, held its open house on Fri., Feb 11. In addition to the festivities and a film screening, the Ambassador presented certificates to students graduating from the Maradi American Corner English Club. The following day, the Corner hosted an AIDS awareness conference which, in addition to Ambassador Williams and the Rector of the University of Maradi, was attended by nearly 100 people.
