Q: What are genotypes and what do they mean?

Viruses have genes, too. The type of virus you have can be one of six different groups, or genotypes. Three in four HCV patients in the U.S. have type 1a or 1b, and the rest have type 2 or 3. Knowing the genotype of your virus is important. Treatment is more likely to work in patients with genotype 2 or 3 compared to those with genotype 1.
