Womack Army Medical Center General Surgery Service


The General Surgery Service provides surgical treatment of abdominal diseases such as gallbladder, stomach, pancreas, small and large intestine, anorectum, hemorrhoids, and hernias; endocrine diseases such as thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal; breast disease; chest diseases to include esophagus and lung; skin problems such as burns and other lesions; vascular diseases and trauma of all sorts.

Laparoscopic, thoracoscopic, as well as endoscopic surgical techniques are provided when appropriate to include laparoscopic reflux surgery and colonoscopy.  Pediatric surgical care is also available.  Active duty service members, retirees, and their families are all welcome for care by our service.  Ten general surgeons see approximately 15,000 clinic patients yearly. A wound care clinic is run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 0730 - 1100.  No wound care is available on Wednesday mornings. 

Minor surgical procedures are also performed in clinic.  The General Surgery Service trains all Womack Family Practice interns and physician assistants, as well as junior and senior surgical residents from Walter Reed and Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Centers. Several of our surgeons are Clinical Assistant Professors of Surgery for the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland.  Coordinated care via direct referral and consultation with Walter Reed Army Medical Center is available.
