Michael C. Camuñez fue nominado por el Presidente Barack Obama y, el 16 de septiembre de 2010, fue confirmado por unanimidad por el Senado de los Estados Unidos como Subsecretario Adjunto de Comercio para Acceso a Mercados y Cumplimiento (MAC, por sus siglas en ingles) dentro de la Administración de Comercio Internacional. Como Subsecretario Adjunto, el Sr. Camuñez juega un papel fundamental en el apoyo del programa de recuperación económica del Presidente Obama, ayudando a coordinar los esfuerzos del Departamento de Comercio para crear empleos en los Estados Unidos a través de la Iniciativa Nacional de Exportación. Bajo el liderazgo del Sr. Camuñez, MAC ayudará a dirigir las estrategias para abrir nuevos mercados para introducir bienes y servicios de los Estados Unidos, identificar y eliminar los importantes retos de acceso a mercados, en particular las barreras no arancelarias, y ayudar a vigilar y aplicar los acuerdos comerciales con los Estados Unidos más los compromisos para garantizar que empresas estadounidenses, y los trabajadores que emplean, puedan competir en igualdad de condiciones.
Antes de asumir su papel en el Departamento de Comercio, el Sr. Camuñez sirvió en la Casa Blanca desde el inicio de la administración del Presidente Obama como Consejero Especial del Presidente en la Oficina Jurídica de la Casa Blanca, así como Asistente Especial del Presidente, asesorando en temas relacionados con las candidaturas y nombramientos ejecutivos en el gabinete nacional y los organismos independientes.
Antes de incorporarse a la administración del Presidente Obama, el Sr. Camuñez fue socio del bufete de abogados O'Melveny & Myers LLP, donde representó a importantes empresas (incluidas en el listado anual que publica la revista Fortune, listando las 500 empresas más grandes de los Estados Unidos) en una gama de asuntos relacionados con disputas comerciales nacionales e internacionales. También aconsejó a compañías estadounidenses que hacen negocios en el extranjero en Latinoamérica y Europa sobre el cumplimiento de las empresas, la lucha contra la corrupción, y los riesgos asociados con la inversión extranjera y las operaciones de empresas multinacionales.
Es egresado de la Universidad de Harvard y la Escuela de Leyes de Stanford. Sirvió como Asesor Principal en Políticas para el servicio nacional de la administración del ex presidente Bill Clinton, donde ayudó a establecer la Corporación para el Servicio Nacional y el programa AmeriCorps. También ha servido en numerosas juntas, incluyendo como Presidente de la Fundación de Bares Mexico-Americana en Los Ángeles, Comisionado de Ética de Los Ángeles, y miembro de la Junta de Visitantes de la Escuela de Leyes de Stanford.
