Smart Grid Deployment Improves Energy Efficiency and Creates Jobs of the Future
WASHINGTON – Today Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing and Services Nicole Y. Lamb-Hale discussed international collaboration to facilitate global smart grid trade and deployment at the International Smart Grid Summit, part of the four-day GridWeek conference.
Lamb-Hale reviewed the administration’s initiatives that focus on the energy sector during her keynote remarks to the 1,300 industry and government representatives attending the event.
“In the U.S. energy sector, smart grid is a key area of focus for us,” said Lamb-Hale. “The Obama administration understands well that the smart grid could help us to reduce power demand by 20 percent, will lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and will give us the opportunity to develop a highly innovative sector of the economy, creating new and high-skilled jobs.”
With global trade in Smart Grid technologies and services growing, the International Trade Administration is working to promote smart grid trade and investment around the world and is playing a major role in the GridWeek International Smart Grid Summit.
“The smart grid has the potential to be the critical platform for the world’s clean energy economy and we’re already seeing that developing, designing, building, and installing smart grid technology is part of job creation,” said Lamb-Hale. “Recovery Act smart grid investments alone are projected to directly create 43,000 jobs and support another 61,000 in the private sector.”
In 2012, GridWeek will be an official participant in the Commercial Service’s International Buyer Program.
