International Education Exports Highlighted as Commerce's Largest Education Services Mission Ends in Hanoi
Education fairs in Indonesia and Vietnam promote U.S. higher education to thousands of students
HANOI, Vietnam —Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade, Francisco Sánchez, concluded the largest education services trade mission in Commerce Department history today in Hanoi. Joined by 56 U.S. colleges and universities, and more than 12,000 excited students and parents in country, the mission highlighted education as an export including a series of education fairs during stops in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, Vietnam.
This education mission successfully introduced Vietnamese and Indonesian students and their parents to the educational programs and opportunities offered by 56 prestigious U.S. colleges and universities,” said Under Secretary Sánchez.
Education and training is one of the United States’ leading services exports. The industry annually adds $20 billion to the U.S. economy.
The International Trade Administration partnered with the Institute for International Education to present education fairs in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The fairs drew more than 2,000 students interested in pursuing higher education opportunities in the United States.
Vietnam ranks ninth among countries sending students to the United States with more than 13,000 students. Overall, Vietnam has more than 20,000 students studying abroad, paying about $200 million in tuition and fees every year.
Throughout the mission, Under Secretary Sánchez highlighted how an education from U.S. colleges or universities benefits Indonesian and Vietnamese students, and ultimately, both economies. Delegation members met with Indonesian and Vietnamese institutions of higher learning to explore possible partnerships, faculty and/or student exchange programs, and joint research projects.
Indonesia and Vietnam are two key export markets for U.S. companies. Expanding educational opportunities for their students will provide direct benefits to U.S. companies doing business with these critical markets in the future.
