Federal Support for Stetson University

U.S. Congressman John L. Mica (R-7th District) today announced that the U.S. House of Representatives has approved $500,000 in federal support for Stetson University’s Sage Hall Science Facility Expansion project in DeLand. The federal assistance is included in a budget measure recently passed by the House of Representatives.
“Congress recognizes the important mission of Stetson University to educate science professionals in Central Florida,” said Rep. Mica. “Stetson University has the opportunity to attract and educate young people in fast-growing science professions so vitally important to our nation’s future competition in a global market.”
The construction of a 20,000 square foot addition to house all of the natural science classrooms, laboratories, and additional classroom and administrative space will greatly benefit our students, our educators, and our community. Considered state-of-the-art at the time of its construction more than 40 years ago, Sage Hall was built with federal support from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and the Office of Education.
Last week’s action is part of Congress’s work to complete the appropriations bills that provide the operating budgets for the agencies and departments of the Federal Government. The House passed the Fiscal Year 2008 Transportation-HUD Appropriations bill, which includes the transportation funding, by a vote of 268-153.
These appropriations are subject to approval by the U.S. Senate.
