Six from AmeriCorps Cape Cod Fire Corps Deploy to Staten Island

As the cleanup from Hurricane Sandy continues, we will occasionally share stories about national service members involved in the recovery effort.

A six-member crew from the AmeriCorps Cape Cod Fire Corps is currently in the middle of a one-week deployment to the Fort Wadsworth area in Staten Island, NY.

The Cape Cod National Seashore and Barnstable County, partnering with AmeriCorps Cape Cod for years, was able to dispatch the team specializing in fire management and debris clean-up to Staten Island within 48 hours of receiving the call for assistance.

"I have family in Pennsylvania and New Jersey who were really affected by Hurricane Sandy. Since I cannot be there to help, I am happy to be serving the Staten Island community," said Tyler Cross, AmeriCorps Fire Corps member.

The AmeriCorps Cape Cod Fire Corps has been performing as a cohesive unit for almost a month, and is expected to remove, chip, and dispose of fire fuel and debris in this response to Hurricane Sandy under the leadership of AmeriCorps staff and National Parks Service Fire Management.

“The timely effort demonstrates the strength of our multi-agency partnership, as we were able to respond quickly at this time of national need,” said Amy Henderson, AmeriCorps Cape Cod Program Specialist.
