About the Library

Mission Statement

The Library's mission is to maintain and develop collections and services in support of the present and future research needs of the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, National Marine Fisheries Service . In order to carry out this mission, the Library will always aim to:
  • develop and maintain an understanding of the needs of its users and potential users and respond to them;
  • build the necessary collections and services and provide access to them;
  • preserve the collections for future users;
  • develop appropriate skills and motivation of staff at all levels;
  • ensure its financial viability;
  • cooperate with other libraries within NOAA-NMFS and in the world;
  • exploit in all areas the potential of technology in order to achieve these aims.

The Collection

The library supports research in the areas of coral reef ecology, fisheries, fish biology, marine mammals, marine biology, and oceanography in the western and central Pacific Ocean. The emphasis of materials is on the Hawaiian Archipelago and other U.S.-related islands in the Pacific.
The library maintains an extensive collection of books, monographs, reports, journals, newsletters, maps and charts. There is also a large collection of scientific reprints and over 800 Japanese-to-English translations.
