Much like people, every road, every highway, has its own personality...its own character

US 1 - Quantico Corridor Studies

Project Location Map

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division (EFLHD) in cooperation with Stafford County, Prince William County, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Stafford and Prince William County Departments of Transportation has initiated two related studies to improve safety and mobility on Virginia’s US Route 1.   One study focuses on a 6-mile section of the US 1 corridor from Joplin/Fuller south to Telegraph Road at Boswell’s Corner. The second study focuses more specifically on the intersection at Telegraph Road at Boswell’s Corner leading to Marine Corps Base Quantico’s Westside Gate.  FHWA is coordinating with the associated regulatory agencies to complete these studies on related, but independent schedules.

  • US 1/Quantico Planning/Preliminary Engineering Study focuses on the feasibility of and potential environmental impacts to the roadway and intersection improvements along US 1 from Joplin/Fuller Road to Telegraph Road at Boswell’s Corner. The study will evaluate existing and projected transportation conditions. With the public’s help, the study will culminate with a preferred recommendation for the modification of US 1 to accommodate current and future traffic.

A final public meeting for this study is scheduled for October 9, 2012. The team will present several alternatives for the modification of US Route 1. Geometric concepts and corresponding feasibility study-level evaluations will be available for review at this meeting. Additional meeting information is provided below in the Public Involvement section. Following the public meeting, the team will refine the corridor modification concept and prepare final study documentation including a conceptual corridor design and engineering feasibility study report.

  • US 1/Telegraph Road Improvement Study focuses on potential modifications from Telegraph Road at Marine Corps Base Quantico’s Westside Gate to US 1 to improve short- to mid-term traffic operations and safety. The Telegraph Road study is evaluating intersection modification concepts and their possible impacts. As a part of this study, preliminary engineering plans, a transportation study and an environmental review in accordance with the National Environmental Policy and National Historic Preservation Acts, will be prepared with the ultimate goal of constructing intersection improvements in the near-term.

In late 2012, a refined concept will be presented for public review and comment along with a report summarizing potential environmental effects of the concept. Once the concept is approved, it is anticipated that a design-build contract will be awarded by mid-2013 allowing the project to proceed into final engineering and construction. Construction of intersection modifications are scheduled to be completed by early 2014.

Public Involvement

The public’s input is an important part of the process. We encourage participation to ensure that plans meet the needs of the community. During these studies opportunities will be offered to attend information meetings, review materials and provide your insight. The following are helpful links to materials and presentations from public information meetings.
