Second/Third Grade

Welcome to our classroom webpage!

Dear Parents,

As you are aware there is a huge difference between 1st and 2nd grade and 2nd and 3rd grade work, homework, and assessments. It is important to help your child complete all homework and to study for tests. The information below might help you and your child to be more successful in school.

Language Arts
Reading Streets:  We work with a story for a week.  On Friday we do a picture walk together through the new story.  Your child can read the new story over the weekend.  Read the story (or parts of the story) with your child each night, asking comprehension questions, finding nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, etc.  Have your child work on reading out loud with expression.  Monday I read the story to the group, Tuesday and Wednesday the group takes turns reading the story, and on Thursday they partner read.  The work on each story ends on Thursday with the final spelling test.
The stories are longer so I am including the start/stop page numbers of new stories on Friday’s assignment notebook. Students need to read/discuss the before pages and after pages to the main story.   As 3rd  graders read the new story over the weekend, they need to write down the words they do not understand to bring them into school on Monday so they can include the words in their Reading Response Journal that they write on each story.   At the end of a unit we will have a Unit test, to include vocabulary words.
Spelling:  New spelling words come home on Friday along with challenge words.  All students need to put them in ABC order.  They do not have to re-copy the words or to put them into sentences, unless the homework directions say to.

Math:   When we complete a math chapter we have a math test.  The last two pages in a chapter are usually review/practice test questions.  Use these two pages to study for the test.  All students know when there will be a test.

Science:   For each chapter all students have a work page for each lesson.  3rd graders also have a study guide for each chapter and vocabulary flashcards.  Use these to help study for a test.

Social Studies:   At the end of every chapter we have a test.  We have work pages that go with each lesson.  The students complete these pages in class, we go over all the questions to make sure they understand and know the correct answers.  3rd graders also make vocabulary flashcards.  Use the completed work pages and flashcards to help study for the test.
Flash Cards:  Your child needs to know the addition and subtraction facts by memory.  They can use flash cards for practice at home.  Counting on fingers slow them down.
Chapter Books:  We are keeping track of the chapter books read by each student on a bulletin board outside of the classroom.  Have your child bring in the book, or simply write the title and author on a slip of paper, and we will add it to your child’s “reading running shoe”.  I like to sit with the student and have them tell me the highlights of the book.
If you have any questions or concerns please stop in or call.
Thank you,
Ms. M
