  • To avoid delays, it is advisable to send the dewars few days earlier than the beamtime start date.

  • We will refill the dewars upon their arrival.

  • You must plan for delivery to the beamline between Monday and Friday! There are no deliveries to the beamlines on weekends. On Saturdays only the deliveries may be accepted by the APS Guesthouse, but users must call them first to confirm their shipment.

  • For returning user dewars, please send Sheila Trznadel (strznadel@anl.gov) your address, phone, and FedEx account number and she will have them sent back.

 Training

As soon as your application is approved for the beamtime, please take some time to visit the “User Information” Pull-down menu on the APS home page at http://www.aps.anl.gov/ It is a good source and most of your questions will be answered there.

Before you can access any beamline at APS, you will need to complete mandated training requirements. Please visit APS web site for general training information at http://www.aps.anl.gov/Users/Become_A_User/When_You_Arrive/Complete_orientation.htm or contact user office at http://www.aps.anl.gov/About/Visiting/Directions/index.htm 630-252-9090, or apsuser@aps.anl.gov

Sector specific training, administered by GM/CA @ APS, will be completed as soon as you complete the APS general training and will arrive at sector 23. Untrained personnel is not allowed to be at the beamline alone and will not have access to the station. Sector specific training will be given only once, so please make sure entire group is present.

 Safety

At least a week before you arrive at APS, submit your Experimental Safety Assessment form to APS. Visit http://www.aps.anl.gov/Safety_and_Training/Experiment_Safety_Approval_Form/index.html for detailed information and instructions.

 License and user agreements - User agreement

Before you are able to conduct experiments at APS, you must have User Agreement. Visit http://www.aps.anl.gov/Users/Become_A_User/Before_You_Arrive/Arrange_for_access.htm for details. GM/CA @ APS will provide crystallographic and other software. It is your responsibility to make sure that Your home institution has appropriate licenses for using the software.

At the end of your visit, your host will conduct informal “end of experiment” interview. Please plan about 30 minutes for it. In you publications, please acknowledge the beamline by a following sentence: GM/CA @ APS has been funded in whole or in part with Federal funds from the National Cancer Institute (Y1-CO-1020) and the National Institute of General Medical Science (Y1-GM-1104). Use of the Advanced Photon Source was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Basic Energy Sciences, Office of Science, under contract No. W-31-109-ENG-38.

 Backup Disks Information

Do not forget to bring with you portable disks for backing up your data. You need to plan disks space in the amount of 500GB or more. Supported media and disk formats are described here. Your data will be saved at the GM/CA storage arrays for two weeks only solely to make sure the backup to portable disks is complete and undamaged.

 Automounter Templates

If you are planning to use automounter, you would need to bring with you and upload into the JBluIce data acquisition program a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file describing your samples. The spreadsheet templates and the instructions on their filling are avalible through the Facilities -> Automounter requirements page.
