About Nixon Presidential Materials Releases

Join Us

The publicly available Nixon Presidential Materials in our collection either relate to Abuses of Governmental Power or to the constitutional and statutory duties of the President and his staff. We process the Nixon Presidential Materials in accordance with Federal Regulations.

Federal Regulations

Processing the materials involves performing the traditional archival functions of arrangement, description, and preservation. The archivists also review for purely "private-political" and "private-personal" materials, as defined in the federal regulations.

Before making material available, the regulations require that the Nixon Library Staff place a notice in the Federal Register of our intent to release material to the public. This notice provides for a thirty-day comment period during which time former Nixon White House staff members and the Nixon Estate can object to materials that the Nixon Library Staff proposes to release. A panel of senior archivists appointed by the Archivist of the United States adjudicates the objections and makes the final determinations.

Restrictions

The archivists must also review the materials for information that would compromise national security, cause an unwarranted invasion of privacy, violate an agency policy or federal statute, or compromise trade secrets.
