According to the Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act (PRMPA) and its implementing regulations, all Nixon Presidential Materials, including Nixon White House Tapes, must be released through a public opening.  [See Also:  Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act]

This process includes:

  1. written notifications to the incumbent President, the Nixon estate, former employees on our registry list (a list of former Nixon administration staffers who requested to be notified of materials proposed for public access), and the publishing of a notice in the Federal Register.  [See Also:  How We Process the Nixon Presidential Materials]

  2. Once these notifications have been made, those notified have 30 days to inspect or comment on the materials proposed for opening.

  3. Once this period has expired, the National Archives publishes a Press Release providing details about the materials to be opened to the public.  [See Also:  Nixon Press Releases]

On the day of the opening, the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum allows public access to the materials in the Research Room in at the Library in Yorba Linda, California.  [See Also:  Plan Your Visit]
