The Committee on the Judiciary’s internship program offers both undergraduate and law students an opportunity to experience the operations of a congressional committee firsthand and learn about the important role that House committees in the House of Representatives play in the legislative process. The Committee on the Judiciary has jurisdiction over a wide range of legislative and oversight issues which include constitutional amendments, litigation reform, patent and trademark law, federal criminal law, federal civil rights law, anti-terrorism, immigration and naturalization, and antitrust. Interns are generally placed - based on their areas of interest and experience - with the Full Committee or one of the five subcommittees.
Internship applications should include a current resume, list of references, and letter of introduction which contains the following information:
1) Why you are interested in an internship with the Committee
2) Your dates and hours of availability
3) At least one paragraph explaining your political views - specifically on issues falling under the Committee’s jurisdiction
Applications can be submitted in the following ways:
1) By e-mail to: hjc_republicanintern@mail.house.gov
2) By mail to:
Intern Coordinator
House Judiciary Committee
2138 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
Deadlines for applications are the following:
Summer 2013 - March 15
Fall 2013 - June 15
Spring 2014 - October 15
Interested candidates should be aware that there is a Majority (Republican) and a Minority (Democrat) office within the committee. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply with the office which most appropriately reflects their political views. Those interested in interning for the Minority, can find their contact information on the link “Minority Website.”
The Committee considers internship applications for both the spring and fall semesters as well as the summer months. Summer is a popular time for students to seek internships, and selection is highly competitive.
