U.S. Embassy Jakarta is a main donor for Social Media Fest 2012, one of the largest events of its kind in all of Southeast Asia. Social Media Fest is unique in that it brings together all parts of the digital landscape: online communities, content creators, high-tech startups, and telecommunications and technology companies. By bringing together all of these different groups into one event, Social Media Fest 2012 supports Internet freedom, high-tech entrepreneurship, innovation, and online collaboration.
Last year's Social Media Fest 2011 attracted more than 44,000 attendees. This year, Social Media Fest 2012 is targeting 100,000 people during the three-day event. Social Media Fest 2012 takes places October 12-14, 2012 in Jakarta.
Since 2008, U.S. Embassy Jakarta has been a supporter of events like Pesta Blogger, On/Off, and now Social Media Fest 2012 to encourage the continued development of Internet connectivity in Indonesia, exercise of online expression, growth of value-added jobs and high-tech startups, and use of online tools for offline change. The Embassy uses online tools like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to communicate with Indonesian audiences about the U.S.-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership and bring our countries closer together.
Within the U.S. Government, U.S. Embassy Jakarta has become a leader in digital diplomacy. Indonesia, too, has emerged as a leader in the use of social media: It has the fourth-largest Facebook community in the world, Jakarta is the leading city in the world for Twitter use, and there are more than four million registered blogs. Increasingly, more and more Indonesian Internet users are finding ways to use online tools like Twitter and Facebook to create offline change.
