About the Program The Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders (SCI&D) System of Care has a mission to support, promote, and maintain the health, independence, quality of life, and productivity of individuals with SCI&D throughout their lives. These objectives are accomplished through: rehabilitation; sustaining medical and surgical care; patient and/or family education; psychological, social, and vocational care; research; education; and professional training in the continuum of care for persons with SCI&D. (Veterans Health Administration--VHA Directive 1176)
The Cincinnati VAMC SCI&D Clinic serves as a “Spoke” in the “Hub and Spoke” continuum of care within the VHA. It is in the Veterans Integrated Services Network (VISN), VISN 10, where the Cleveland VAMC is the SCI&D Center (Hub). As a “Spoke”, the SCI&D Clinic is designated the “SCI Primary Care Team” and provides care and consultative services to the SCI population. The team members have completed specialized training or have equivalent training and experience in SCI.
Services Offered The “SCI Primary Care Team” works closely with the veteran with SCI&D, family members, significant others, and other health care professionals to ensure the highest quality of lifetime care.
We assist the veteran with SCI&D to:
- Optimize their health
- Maximize functional independence
- Enhance their productivity and quality of life
